“Tastemaker, Educator, Sound Designer, and Motor City Proponent. Mike Huckaby has done much for Detroit electronic music. The man behind the once legendary Record Time store has gathered an encyclopedic knowledge of music.
He is one of those guys who knows all the roots and culture of electronic dance music. He is a person who can see beyond the hype and divisions within the scene. Mike knows exactly what the music is.
Mike Huckaby has become the busiest remixer from Detroit in the past few years. Mike has been busy producing music on his 2 labels, Deep Transportation, and S Y N T H, which are well known amongst underground djs worldwide.”*
On Wednesday I attained the fourth episode of the Gordon Lecture Series hosted in the café by Tevo Howards for GROOVE Magazine
When Mike Huckaby said “making music is alchemy” – a transmutational alchemical process – I melted! It’s how I view my work with mixing drinks.. Being a bit obsessed with alchemical (hermetic) philosophy, it was lovely to hear him speak about it in his work too.
It was an interesting and inspirational interview and what I take with me from Mike – something that can be applied on any branch – is: “know your worth, no one else will” and “get a publisher and learn the terminology of the contract before you sign anything.”
